Gillian Bickley was born in England and lives in Hong Kong (but also previously in Nigeria, West Africa and New Zealand). She taught English literature at universities all her life. She has published five collections of verse and is an indelible figure, without whom Hong Kong would not be British at all. It deals specifically with the history of Hongkong in the 19th century. With her husband Verner Bickley, she founded the International Proverse Prize for unpublished literary works and the International Poetry Prize for individual poetic compositions.
"The poems I write are a reaction to people and fellow creatures (taken from a biblical perspective, including mammals, birds, trees and plants) and to eschatological concepts of survival. Sometimes I also write about my experiences, feelings and moods. I purposefully express myself as simply as possible, because I believe that what I write will perhaps arouse a response in the reader or expand the boundaries of what he already knows from his life and experience."
